VAT returns in the Netherlands: Btw-aangifte explained

Businesses in the Netherlands file a VAT return for each period. Most file quarterly, and the tax authority sets the period when you register.

General information only, not tax advice. Rules change, so check the official sources at the bottom of this page before you act.

The obligation

VAT return (btw-aangifte)

Who must file

Businesses registered for VAT in the Netherlands. After registration you receive a letter with your period, and you can ask for a monthly or annual period instead.

How it works

Collect VAT data from the ERP for the period → Map tax codes to the return lines → Reconcile to the ledgers and flag differences → Review and approve → File through the official channel

Key dates for the Netherlands

  1. End of the next month
Deadline for monthly and quarterly returns, and for payment (for example 31 October 2026 for the third quarter)
  2. Before 1 April
Deadline for annual returns, for the previous year
  3. Date received
The day the tax authority receives the return counts as the filing date
  4. No extensions
An extension is possible only in the case of a calamity

What the return contains

The return reports the VAT on sales and purchases for the period. Late or missing returns lead to an estimated assessment (naheffingsaanslag) and fines.

What your ERP has to deliver

Taxera needs your sales and purchase VAT data by tax code, company code and period, with every tax code mapped to the right line of the return. Figures must tie back to the ledgers before the return is sent.

Practical insights

  • Most filers use online filing or accounting software, or a service provider files for them.
  • Because the deadline and payment fall on the same day, cash planning belongs in the same calendar.

Common pitfalls

  • Counting on an extension that is not available.
  • Letting an estimated assessment replace a late return.
