VAT returns in Spain: Modelo 303 explained

Businesses in Spain file the modelo 303 self-assessment for each period. Most file quarterly, and some file monthly.

General information only, not tax advice. Rules change, so check the official sources at the bottom of this page before you act.

The obligation

VAT self-assessment, form 303 (modelo 303)

Who must file

Businesses registered for VAT in Spain. Some file monthly, for example those in the monthly refund register.

How it works

Collect VAT data from the ERP for the period → Map tax codes to the return lines → Reconcile to the ledgers and flag differences → Review and approve → File through the official channel

Key dates for Spain

  1. 1 to 20
Quarterly return, filed in April, July and October for the previous quarter
  2. 1 to 30 January
    Return for the fourth quarter
  3. 1 to 30 of the next month
Monthly return. The January return is due by the last day of February
  4. 1 to 30 January
Annual summary (modelo 390), filed together with the fourth-quarter return where it applies
  5. Non-business days
If the last day is a Saturday or a holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day

What the return contains

The return shows the VAT charged on sales, the VAT deducted on purchases and the result to pay or reclaim, with special sections for EU and reverse-charge operations.

What your ERP has to deliver

Taxera needs your sales and purchase VAT data by tax code, company code and period, with every tax code mapped to the right line of the return. Figures must tie back to the ledgers before the return is sent.

Practical insights

  • Deadlines are windows. File early in the window if you want to leave time for corrections.
  • The annual summary uses the same data, so a clean fourth quarter makes it easier.

Common pitfalls

  • Mixing up the quarterly window (to the 20th) with the monthly window (to the 30th).
  • Leaving the fourth quarter to the last days of January.
